Temu and AliExpress are separate China-rooted marketplaces. Neither is always cheaper or faster. For a U.S. order, compare the same model and quantity, the named seller, the final checkout total, the promised delivery date and the return label attached to that exact listing.

Temu currently offers a broader general return window for many items. AliExpress gives more listing-level variation: products carrying its Free Return label use a specific 15-day process, while seller and transaction terms matter outside that program. The practical winner changes by order.

The table compares current policy architecture, not the performance of every seller. A warehouse near the buyer can beat a cross-border parcel on either platform. A listing with no usable return label can erase a small price advantage.

Are Temu and AliExpress the same company?

No.

  • Temu is reported by PDD Holdings as one of its platforms. U.S. terms name Whaleco Inc. as the operator contracting with U.S. users.
  • AliExpress is part of Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group. Alibaba says the marketplace launched in 2010 and connects consumers directly with manufacturers around the world.
  • Current AliExpress terms say a buyer or visitor from the United States contracts with AliExpress E-Commerce One Pte. Ltd.

PDD Holdings and Alibaba Group are separate listed companies. Temu is not AliExpress with another design, and a store name appearing on both platforms does not prove it is the same legal seller.

Which is cheaper?

There is no defensible platform-wide answer because a search results page rarely compares identical units. Use a basket test:

  1. match the exact model or specification, not a similar thumbnail;
  2. normalize quantity—one piece, pair, pack or set;
  3. match material, dimensions, voltage, plug and included accessories;
  4. record shipping, tax, coupon conditions and minimum spend at checkout;
  5. subtract only a coupon you can actually use on that order;
  6. add the cost of a realistic return when the first free label does not apply.

For apparel, also price the risk of an unusable size. For electronics, a cheaper listing without a traceable manufacturer, supported voltage or relevant certification is not the same product. A crossed-out reference price is not evidence that another buyer paid it.

Which ships faster?

Compare the promised dates on the two checkout sheets at the same moment. Do not use a blog’s average as if it controlled your order.

Four variables dominate:

  • fulfillment location: local warehouse versus cross-border origin;
  • dispatch time: whether the seller has stock ready;
  • service level: standard, consolidated, Choice or another labeled route;
  • last-mile carrier and address: including remote-area and restricted-address limits.

Alibaba says AliExpress launched Choice in March 2023 with free shipping, free returns and delivery guarantees. Those benefits describe the Choice service, not every AliExpress listing. Temu presents delivery and purchase-protection promises, but the exact arrival range and remedy belong to the order record.

Before payment, save the promised-delivery screen and note whether compensation is cash, refund, credit or coupon. “Delivery guarantee” does not necessarily mean the parcel physically arrives by the date; it can define what remedy follows a delay.

The return policies are not measured from the same event

This is the most important difference.

Temu

Temu’s U.S. policy checked on 26 August 2026 says many eligible products can be returned within 90 days of purchase. Exceptions include listed non-returnable categories, and most electronics can use a seller-dependent 45-, 60- or 90-day window.

After submitting a request, the parcel must be postmarked within 14 days. The first return shipment for returnable items from each order is normally free. A second or later return from the same order currently deducts $7.99 plus applicable tax, with separate conditions for pickup, oversized, overweight and remote returns.

AliExpress Free Return

AliExpress’ published Free Return terms apply only to products carrying the Free Return label and to participating buyers and sellers. The buyer can open a dispute within 15 calendar days after confirming receipt or automatic receipt confirmation, then must send the goods within 15 calendar days after applying.

The participating seller bears eligible return shipping and supplies prepaid label capacity through the platform. The terms warn that splitting items or making multiple return requests can produce additional shipping cost, and returned goods must pass the program’s condition requirements.

Why “90 days vs 15 days” is still incomplete

Temu counts its general window from purchase. AliExpress Free Return counts from receipt confirmation. Both then start a shorter shipping clock after the request. You cannot compare only the two largest numbers.

Always open the live order page. A seller-specific promise can be more favorable, a product can be excluded, and both policies can change.

Buyer protection: what each promise actually covers

Temu says its Purchase Protection Program offers full refunds for items that do not arrive, arrive damaged or are not as described. It also tells buyers to keep transactions inside Temu so the platform can assist.

AliExpress routes buyer claims through the order-page dispute system. Its current terms make buyers and sellers responsible for the transaction terms, subject to platform transaction rules, while Free Return and Choice create additional labeled services.

On either platform:

  1. keep payment and seller messages inside the platform;
  2. capture the listing, exact specification and delivery promise before purchase;
  3. film or photograph the opening of an expensive or fragile parcel;
  4. preserve the shipping label, model number and all parts;
  5. open the dispute before the displayed clock expires;
  6. use the platform-issued return address and label;
  7. keep the carrier acceptance receipt until money reaches the chosen refund route.

A seller asking for off-platform payment, a false dispute reason or closure of the claim before a promised replacement arrives is asking you to give up evidence or protection.

Which is safer?

Neither platform name certifies an individual product. Safety depends on the seller, manufacturer, model, standards and consequence of failure.

Use the same threshold on both:

  • search CPSC recalls by brand, seller, product type and model;
  • avoid unknown chargers, batteries and protective equipment for high-load or safety-critical use;
  • do not treat reviews as proof of electrical, chemical, medical or child-safety compliance;
  • verify branded collectibles or electronics through the brand’s authorized route;
  • stop using a recalled product and follow the regulator’s exact remedy.

The CPSC database contains product-specific recalls for goods sold on online marketplaces, including Temu. A recall applies to the named product and model, not everything on the platform; absence from the database is not a safety certificate.

When Temu is the better fit

Temu’s policy structure can be easier when:

  • the exact item has a clear U.S. delivery promise;
  • you value the longer general return window;
  • you plan to inspect and, if necessary, combine returns from one order;
  • the final total is competitive without relying on another purchase or game.

The current policy is especially sensitive to the order as the return unit. Splitting a second return from the same order can trigger the $7.99 deduction.

When AliExpress is the better fit

AliExpress can be stronger when:

  • you need a specialized component, manufacturer storefront or model not present on Temu;
  • the exact listing carries Choice or Free Return and the promise is visible before payment;
  • seller history, specifications and shipping options are more detailed;
  • you understand the dispute clock measured from receipt confirmation.

AliExpress’ older, broad manufacturer marketplace can expose more variants. More choice also means more work matching model numbers and seller terms.
