Genigods: Nezha is announced for release in 2028 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC through Steam and Epic Games Store. The Xbox version was the new platform change revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026. That means the game is not a PS5 exclusive.
There is no exact day or month. The live Steam page currently says “To be announced”, while the developer’s 2026 announcements and the official Gamescom trailer give the broader 2028 window. Those records answer different fields: the release year is announced, but Steam has not populated a specific store date.
This is a premium, single-player action RPG from Genigods Lab, not a mobile gacha or a game adaptation of the Ne Zha animated films. It reworks a much wider set of Chinese creation myths around Nüwa, the Spirit Pearl, Pangu, Kuafu and Yi, with the player eventually reincarnating as Nezha.

The 2028 window is far enough away that store fields, requirements and feature lists can change. The useful answer today is a verified map of what has been announced—not a countdown built around December 31 or another placeholder.
What is the Genigods: Nezha release date?
Genigods Lab originally announced the game for 2028 in January 2026. The August Gamescom update retained that year while adding Xbox Series X|S to the previously announced PlayStation 5 and PC versions.
No month or day appears in the current developer material reviewed here. Steam’s product page is live and wishlistable, but its release field says “To be announced.” The official Gamescom trailer itself ends with “Coming 2028.” These facts fit together:
- 2028 is the announced release year.
- TBA is Steam’s current exact-date field.
- No official preorder date, unlock time or regional rollout schedule is public.
- A December 31 database entry should not be promoted into an official launch day without a matching Genigods Lab announcement.
This is why “no release date” is only partly useful. There is a year. There is not a date precise enough to plan time off, choose a store or compare preload hours.
Is Genigods: Nezha coming to Xbox?
Yes. Xbox Series X|S was added at Gamescom 2026. The August announcement says Xbox will launch alongside the already announced PS5 and PC editions in 2028.
That update resolves an old query cleanly: Genigods: Nezha is no longer a PlayStation-and-PC-only announcement. Articles, videos and database pages published after the January reveal but before August 25 may still omit Xbox because they reflect the earlier platform set.
The official U.S. Xbox store page is now live. It lists Xbox Series X|S, single-player, achievements and cloud saves, but it does not announce Xbox One, Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere or cross-platform saves. Those remain separate questions.
| Platform question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Is it a PS5 exclusive? | No; Xbox Series and PC are also confirmed |
| Is it on Xbox One? | Not announced |
| Is it on Game Pass? | Not announced |
| Is it Xbox Play Anywhere? | Not announced |
| Will all platforms launch together? | Developer announcement says Xbox joins the other versions for the 2028 launch; exact regional/store timing remains unpublished |
The corporate label also changes by storefront. Steam names Genigods Lab as developer and publisher; Xbox names Genigods Lab as developer and 4Divinity as publisher; the U.S. PlayStation store names Suzhou Pangu Soul Entertainment Technology Co., Ltd as publisher. Those are attributable store records, not a contradiction to resolve by guessing one global publishing arrangement.
Steam, Epic and PC requirements
The Steam product page is already live. It names Genigods Lab as both developer and publisher, lists single-player, Steam achievements and Steam Cloud, and provides English plus Simplified and Traditional Chinese interface, audio and subtitles.
Steam currently publishes preliminary minimum requirements:
| Component | Current minimum field |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-8400 / AMD Ryzen 5 1600 |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GTX 1060 6 GB / Radeon RX 580 8 GB |
| DirectX | Version 11 |
| Storage | 100 GB available space |
These are live store fields for a game targeting 2028, not a guarantee of final performance. A requirements table can change substantially during optimization. It also does not say which settings, resolution or frame rate those components target.
Epic Games Store has a product route and published a developer interview that explicitly says the game will release there in 2028. Steam Cloud does not prove cross-save with Epic, PlayStation or Xbox. No cross-platform account system was identified in the current pages.
Is it single-player, premium or gacha?
Steam lists single-player and does not list online co-op or multiplayer. The original announcement describes a premium, pay-upfront action RPG. No price or preorder is currently displayed, so “premium” identifies the announced business model rather than a known dollar amount.
Nothing in the current evidence describes a character-gacha system, live-service banner schedule or free mobile client. The word “relics” refers to in-game abilities and equipment combinations in the combat description; it should not be converted into a random-purchase claim.
The page also should not promise that the final game contains no optional paid content. A premium base model and a complete post-launch purchase policy are different facts. Deluxe editions, expansions and cosmetic sales have not been comprehensively announced.
Who do you play, and why is this Nezha different?
The player begins as the Spirit Pearl, described by the game as the first life forged by Nüwa from earth, water and fire. The protagonist moves through three stages: a primordial vessel, the first human and a celestial warrior reincarnated as Nezha.
That is not the most familiar English-language Nezha synopsis. In widely circulated stories, Nezha is born into the family of Li Jing and is often represented as a boy or youthful rebel. Genigods Lab instead builds a creation-era arc in which a female-presenting protagonist becomes Nezha after an earlier life as Nüwa’s creation.
Creative director Erdi Yao told Epic Games Store that the studio considered this interpretation possible because Nezha’s gender is not fixed in Chinese culture. That is the studio’s creative argument, not a declaration that every traditional text presents Nezha identically. “Chinese mythology” is not one closed canon; drama, temple traditions, novels, animation and games continually select and recombine different strands.
The title “Genigods” points to that wider creation focus. The world also draws on:
- Nüwa, the creator and repairer of heaven who forges the Spirit Pearl in the game’s premise;
- Pangu, whose eternal sleep leaves the world in disorder;
- Kuafu, associated with chasing the sun and represented here within colossal landscapes;
- Yi, the archer known for shooting down excessive suns;
- the Five-Colored Stones, used in stories of Nüwa repairing the damaged sky.
The game is therefore not merely “the Nezha movie as a Soulslike.” It uses Nezha as the eventual heroic identity inside a larger genesis-myth remix.
Is it connected to Ne Zha 2?
No story or franchise connection to the animated Ne Zha films is announced. Gematsu’s Gamescom material says the studio collaborated with members of the animation production team on cinematic fluid simulation. Shared technical contributors do not make the game a film adaptation, sequel or licensed universe.
The more visible design connection is thematic: both take a famous figure and build a contemporary visual system around rebellion, transformation and cosmic scale. Genigods: Nezha has its own developer, protagonist arc, world structure and combat mechanics.
The Steam page identifies several mechanics that belong to this game specifically:
- ground and free aerial combat using dual stances;
- the Fire-Tipped Spear and Wind Fire Wheels;
- water-powered parries, counters and movement;
- relic fusion that combines mythic artifacts into new abilities;
- climbing and fighting across colossal divine bodies.
In the Epic interview, the developers compare the combat ambition with God of War 3 and explain that they are borrowing the accessibility idea of modern controls from Street Fighter 6. Those are direct creative references, not evidence that Sony, Capcom or Santa Monica Studio developed the game.
What the new Gamescom trailer changes
The August trailer is valuable for two reasons. First, it carries the 2028 window and the broader platform announcement at the moment Xbox joins. Second, it shows that the project is moving beyond a single reveal-boss clip into a wider presentation of the world, protagonist forms and ground-to-air combat.
It remains publisher footage. A cinematic or gameplay trailer cannot prove final frame rate, input latency, enemy intelligence, map size or the quality of a complete campaign. The Steam page has no user reviews because the game is not released.
The Epic developer interview provides more structural detail: the team plans roughly 60 enemies, ten zones built from the bodies of colossal gods, dynamic weather and three endings. Those are developer plans published in March 2026. They are useful scope signals, but production targets can change before 2028 and should not be presented as an independent hands-on verdict.
Why it belongs in a contemporary China guide
Genigods: Nezha is not valuable here simply because it contains mythological names. Its export proposition combines Chinese creation stories, premium console distribution, Unreal Engine production and a combat language consciously compared with globally familiar action and fighting games.
The cultural value is also in what the studio changes. Nüwa is not background decoration; she creates the player character. Nezha is not introduced at birth in the usual family narrative; the identity is reached through a three-stage transformation. Kuafu and Yi are connected through a solar catastrophe rather than treated as separate encyclopedia entries.
That is a modern creative act, not a museum display. It can be evaluated on its sources, choices and finished execution without flattening it into either “authentic Chinese myth” or “a Chinese copy of God of War.”
For adjacent releases, Who is Zhong Kui? explains a different mythic figure now entering global game searches, while ZOOPUNK shows a Shanghai studio exporting an original animal-industrial universe rather than adapting classical mythology.
What you can do now
- Wishlist the game through its official Steam page.
- Treat 2028 as the release year, not a confirmed exact date.
- Use the Steam page for current PC requirements but recheck closer to launch.
- Do not buy a preorder key; no official price or preorder window was identified.
- Follow Genigods Lab and the official store pages for an exact date, price and preorder announcement.
